Vietnam Day 1 – Orientation at UEF and Bus Tour of City

Today was the first day in Ho Chi Minh City and I think today gave the perfect foundation for what’s to come in the following two weeks!
During the UEF orientation, I sat next to a student named Sayu who was the sweetest person ever. I noticed that the Vietnamese students really appreciated us wanting to come to their country and learn about their culture. I explained the whole process of Plus3 to Sayu and she gave me the biggest hug after learning that Vietnam was one of the three places I wanted to go to. Additionally, whenever she thought she was going to lose me, she would hold onto my arm and bring me to where ever she was going. I thought this was very sweet and also very interesting about their culture.
The bus tour was definitely beautiful and showed a lot of about Ho Chi Ming City’s development. On the tour, Sayu kept pointing out famous landmarks that Vietnamese individuals praise. I really appreciated witnessing first-hand the reconstruction of the city that had to take place after the war.
Lastly, during the Welcome Dinner, I was surprised about the amount of food that was served and what was also served. Right when I walked into the room, I noticed a bunch of tiny finger food that almost looked like extremely well-decorated dessert. It was so nicely put together and I was shocked with how much food just kept being put out. Additionally, I believe it is very important for Vietnamese individuals to ensure their guests are fully fed and not hungry. They kept asking if we were full or wanted anything else. I really appreciated this because they truly wanted to make sure everyone was pleased with what they were eating.
The first day in Ho Chi Minh City went way better than anticipated and I really loved everything I saw and learned today. I can’t wait to spend the next 2 weeks here and gain so much new knowledge!
