Day 1: Arrival in Augsburg

After a long travel day, we have finally landed in Augsburg! I am so excited to be here and see what the whole city has to offer. Once we arrived in Augsburg we were greeted by Nickohlas and Elizabeth. They graciously took us to get food where we ate sandwiches and pretzels. I had a ham and cheese sandwich on some bread that was great. I don’t know if bread in the United States is just not good, but that bread on the sandwich was so much better than any other bread I had. After we were fed, we took a walk around the city, where we learned some history about the city.

My favorite part of that day was when we went to the Fugger complex. I found it fascinating that Fugger created homes for the poorest people in Augsburg. The rent that those lodges currently charge now is 0.88 euros! I cannot imagine living in a place for that cheap price. I found it super interesting that the majority of the complex was from its original design dating back centuries !

To end the day some of us met up with some of the German students to walk around the city during the night. It was totally a different atmosphere than during the day, and hanging out with the students outside class was awesome.

I think that the biggest surprise for me on that day was realizing that yes, a lot of people speak English in Germany, however, not everyone does. I noticed this from some of the small interactions I had with some of the locals in the grocery store.
