I was extremely excited for the first real day in Seoul. Now that the first day is over, I am really glad to say that it did not disappoint. It has been a packed day with a lot of walking. First, I enjoyed the free breakfast which had a plethora of interesting options.
Our method of transportation today was the subway. I am really glad that we have a guide because I still need to figure out Korea’s subway system. We started off the day by walking around Cheonggyecheon. There are many lanterns around to celebrate Buddha’s birthday that is coming up. There is a beautiful river that runs through the city that we were able to explore. Next, we arrived at the Gyeongbuk Palace just in time for the changing of the guards’ ceremony. It was an incredible reenactment of how guards would change watch in the Joseon dynasty.
After a tour of the Palace, we toured the Blue House, which seems to be the equivalent of the American White House. A notable sight there was the banquet hall, where the President of Korea holds important gatherings. After that, we had a break for lunch and our amazing guide who grew up in Seoul showed us her favorite spot to eat. I am so grateful she showed us because we never would have found it. We were the only tourists in the whole restaurant. Entering the afternoon, we toured Jogyessa, a Buddhist temple that was very lively and ornately decorated for Buddha’s birthday. After this, we took the subway to Namdaemun market. It was a less touristy market that was winding and intricate. You could walk into a door and find yourself in a five-floor shopping center.
Lastly, we went to dinner right next to the hotel. It was a traditional Korean dinner. I had foods I didn’t even know you could eat. I had jellyfish, beef tar tar, and so much more. My first full day in Korea was incredible. I have learned so much about Korean culture, and it is only the first day!
