Today was our third day of our business tours and the companies we looked at were different in many ways, and each provided examples of their concerns for the environment/ sustainability. To start off we went to the Vassailiko Cement company. This is the largest heavy industry in Cyprus, and the largest production unit in Europe. They create around 75 billion tons of concrete per year which I thought was impressive. The talk of the ports built and operated by VCW is the main industrial port of Cyprus, serving approximately 300 ships per year. A concern of sustainability for the ports could be how since 80% of imports/ exports are for their company, it is more than likely that there is excess products, and without the we proper placement, it is likely it will go to waste. What also stuck out to me about their use of sustainability was how instead of continuing to fill up landfills, they actually incorporate trash into the making of their cement
Then to continue the day we had lunch at a fish market in near the water. The food kept coming out and while I wasn’t a fan of all of it, I did try most of it. It was such a cool experience to be able to see all the different ways fish and other types of sea food is made and cooked.
Finally, we ended our day at CMMI. Here I received much information from them about partnerships, projects, both in progress and bound to happen, different types of technology advancements, and much more. Some projects include the Green Marine, where the main goals are to capture carbon dioxide, clean the water and air, and have a redirection of fuel consumption. The companies Alliance 4 XR project is an alliance to infuse extended reality skills into higher education and vocational training. They mentioned there were still kinks to work out, they just began this year, and are on track to complete in 36 months.
For my future, especially in the workforce, I feel that there are always new ways and ideas coming into play about reducing energy and waste, and for me I feel like that is a main thing, so using sustainability I feel as if I could work on attending better to do work for the environment.
