Today was a very exciting day, as we went to the largest city in Bavaria and a very popular one, Munich! We headed for the train station fairly early and it was about an hour ride. We arrived around 10 am and were met with swarms of people at the Munich train station, which is exactly what I expected for a sunny Saturday in a large German city. We made our way to the Munich town hall, and incredible building where we met our tour guide. It was so cool to watch puppets dance on the top of the town hall, which happens every day, I believe, at the same time. Everyone watched the figures dance, and we learned some fun history about it at the same time from our tour guide.
Soon it was over and we started our tour walking through the city. A cool fact I learned was that when Hitler marched through the streets, he had tracks painted gold to mark his presence. I also noticed 1984 (referring to George Orwell’s novel) graffitied in numerous places, which I found particularly interesting, and pondered why this might be. We walked past many historical sites throughout the city and learned so many interesting facts, but my favorite part was the walk through the English gardens. There were so many beautiful flowers and structures, and I am so happy I got to witness it in the spring time! We made our way over to some rapids tucked away, and there were crowds of people watching as people were surfing. It was so fun to watch, and I learned that there were some places to surf in Germany: they don’t have to go to other countries to do so.
We navigated our way back to the meeting spot (town hall) and learned some more interesting things on the way. We were left to have free time for the rest of the afternoon, and it was spent with lunch at the original Hofbrauhaus and shopping! Eventually, we met back up with the group and headed for a really great group dinner. It was great to debrief the day and rest with my peers on the trip. We headed back to the train station to leave Munich for Augsburg after another amazing day in Germany!
