Munich (Day 7)

Hallo, and welcome to day 7!

We are officially halfway though our trip here, and got some much needed time in Munich.

We started the day traveling by the train and it was such an easy commute compared to my experiences with trains in the US. We then arrived at Munich and started with a tour of the city.

I learned about their beautiful town hall (the featured picture of this post). Our tour guide told us about the story of the moving figures on the front of the hall. It is the story of a lower class man winning a joust for the hand of marriage from the princess. The figure on the tower move and spin, and depict the joust of the two men, ending with the winner knocking the other off of his horse. The tower goes off three times a day (11am,12pm, 5pm) although, it originally only went off once at 11am until it got so busy they added more times.

After we watched the tower, we headed to the Frauenkirche, a massive and intricate church. We learned of the story behind the church, which is as follows:

An architect designed the church and built it within 20 years, which was thought to be impossible for the time. So, he made a deal with the devil. They agreed to terms that he could build it within the timeframe, but the church had to be filled with light, from only one window. The architect designed it so you could see one window from the back upon entering the church, however hidden behind pillars were other windows. This illusion filled the church with light, but appeared as only one window. So once built, the devil entered the front door, and melted into the floor upon loosing. This left a footprint, which can still be seen in the floor today.

After the church, we did some walking around and saw a Micheal Jackson monument on a famous composers monument. It was such a fun and interesting sight to see. We then continued the walk around the city and saw some other cool street musicians and even people surfing in the river.

After the tour, I did some walking and shopping. I got some fun things to take home, as well as a Mother’s Day gift!
