Now that our time in Germany has come to an end, looking back I am so grateful for the memories, experiences, and friendships I have gained on this trip. Every early morning, and each late night, it was all worth it being surrounded by such great friends. To reflect back on all that I have gained from this trip would take a lifetime. In a few words, it can all be summed up by saying; take the risk, always say yes, and take in every moment!
Going on this trip was something I had been talking about doing for over 6 months before applications even went out. I am so thankful I was selected to travel to Germany with Pitt. The journey alone was worth it all! From the hotel, to the university, to every city we visited, every place was unique in its own way. Starting at the hotel, it quickly became home. Being with a roommate who is now a best friend, and neighbors with people who are very important in my life now was so much fun! Meeting downstairs to eat breakfast together every morning, using the wonderful coffee machine (which was my favorite part of the hotel), and late night talks in the lobby. Exploring new cities, the bus rides that seemed long in the moment but had some of the best laughs, and eating every meal with the best of friends. Aside from just how long our days were the first week, I wouldn’t change a single thing about the experience I had in Germany. The people made the place, and the place was incredible.

As for the academic side of our trip, I learned so much more than I expected to. The factory tours were so insightful, and Audi specifically was SO cool! Being able to see something we use everyday (a car) be made start to finish right in front of us was unforgettable. It’s not everyday you see something like that, or even the smaller parts that go into the car. Working with the German students on the presentations was definitely a learning curve, but that’s part of the reason I think we do this. To see other cultures and what a typical day is like for them. This was definitely something I picked up on through observation as well as conversations. As for the university itself, it was much more green than in America. From the plants on the roofs, the goats eating the grass, to the lack of waste around campus, it is much more sustainable.

Overall, the trip was so amazing, and worth every second. Augsburg was such an amazing town, and for someone who had never been to Europe before, it was a great place to go for the first time. Aside from the shock of how hectic the roads look to drive on, it felt just like Oakland. It made the transition easier for the two weeks. I learned just how strong I am, mentally and physically, to be able to do something out of my comfort zone. It was a great opportunity for growth, and I feel as though that is just what I did. I truly am so grateful to have experience all that I have with everyone on the trip.
