Hello! My name is Jasmine Horton. I am a first-year engineering student at the Swanson School of Engineering. I am interested in electrical engineering. I was born in Pittsburgh, PA, however, my family immediately moved to Arkansas, where we stayed until I was 5. Then, we made the 14-hour drive back to Pittsburgh, and I’ve lived here ever since. Currently, I am a freshman representative of the Pitt chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Through this organization, I tutor middle schoolers for all school subjects, and I teach SAT level math to high schoolers for the NSBE National Tri-Math-a-Lon competition. Aside from being in NSBE, I also like to spend my time listening to music or spending time with my friends. I also love sports and generally being active. I am always down to play a game or go for a walk (my goal is 10,000 steps a day). If you have any music recommendations, please let me know!
This summer, I am participating in Plus3 Cyprus! I chose this program because of how different the culture is from Pittsburgh. It is a small island with sunnier and nicer weather than what I am used to from being in Pittsburgh. The cuisine is also completely different because of the resources produced by its Mediterranean climate. Additionally, the engineering culture in Cyprus is unique because their requirements of engineers are based on the fact that they are surrounded by water. The composition of the island needs different types of engineers who can utilize its natural resources than the types of engineers from Pittsburgh. Through this program, I hope to learn about the engineering opportunities that are unique to Cyprus because of its location and how its engineering design processes differ from those in Pittsburgh.
