Hello! I am Gary Farrell, and I just completed my first year at the University of Pittsburgh. I am from Allison Park, PA and I am pursuing a double major in Computer and Data Science from the School of Computing and Information. I am also in the Frederick Honors College, and I am working towards my Honors Degree. When I am not in class, I stay busy with clubs and my job in the Office of the Chief Information Officer at Pitt IT.
One of the clubs I am most involved in is the Robotic Arms group of the Robotics and Automation Society at Pitt, where I use computer vision to control robotic arms. Finally, when I am home for the summer and away from the crowded streets of Oakland, I enjoy spending time in nature and walking around the rural roads near my house.
I know a lot of Data Science goes into researching sustainability trends and monitoring progress. Therefore, when I heard about Plus3 Netherlands and its focus on sustainability, I was interested. Between my passion for data and my appreciation of the environment, a Plus3 program focusing on sustainability sounded perfect. Additionally, since the program is through the Frederick Honors College, I was excited to meet people with various different interests and majors.
During this program I hope to develop personally, academically, and professionally. While I have traveled before with my family, I look forward to developing more independence on this program. It will now be my responsibility to pack, find meals, and plan experiences during free time. I also look forward to developing academically by taking an analytical view of the Netherlands’ sustainability successes, and considering what similar steps at home and worldwide. Finally, during our various visits with company executives, I hope develop professionally by building both my network and networking skills.
