Hello! My name is Rosie Incorvaia, I just completed my first year at the Swanson School of Engineering, and my Plus3 destination is Costa Rica. Although I’ve switched a couple of times, I ended up deciding on electrical engineering as my major. Outside of engineering, I like to play guitar, draw, paint, and read. I have two older siblings, one of whom is a Pitt alum, and a dog named Giuseppe. I am super excited to fly to Costa Rica in nine days and eager to start exploring the culture and lifestyle there.
Upon researching Costa Rica’s approach to sustainability, I came across several initiatives that stood out. Firstly, Costa Rica generates over 98% of its electricity from renewable sources, which I find extremely impressive. Additionally, Costa Rica has developed a plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with a target of 2030. As someone going into sustainable energy, studying abroad here will serve as a template for the projects I’d like to work on in the future. Lastly, Costa Rica is known for its ecotourism. I love to spend time outdoors and explore nature, so naturally, I cannot wait to explore Costa Rica’s rich biodiverse landscape while abroad!
I chose Costa Rica because I want to develop my Spanish speaking skills and because I am passionate about sustainability. By staying with a host family and living in Costa Rica for two weeks, I’ll be able to use my knowledge of Spanish in real time. While learning Spanish grammar and taking notes during lectures have been helpful, by practicing my speaking every day in a Spanish-speaking country, I will have no choice but to improve. Additionally, Costa Rica is a leader in sustainable business practices. Many Costa Rican businesses are certified for sustainable practices, and the country actively promotes policies that support responsible environmental development. On our various company tours, visits, and Q&A sessions, I will be sure to ask as many questions as I can to learn more about how they integrate sustainability into their industries.
I look forward to seeing everyone on Friday.
