Hola! My name is Megan Potthoff and I just finished my freshman year at the University of Pittsburgh’s College of Business Administration. I intend to major in Supply Chain Management and Marketing with a certificate in Sustainability. On campus I am involved in Phi Beta Lambda, Women in Business, and Letters of Love. I am extremely excited to go to Costa Rica as it is a great experience to enhance my understanding of my areas of study.
Costa Rica is well known for its sustainability initiatives and rich biodiversity. As I researched more about their sustainability practices, I found it fascinating that 98% of Costa Rica’s energy is renewable and they have nearly 60% forest coverage. These statistics are impressive as Costa Rica has a history of deforestation. The introduction of crops, livestock, and tourism resulted in nearly half of its rainforest being destroyed by 1987. However, with improved farming and ecotourism initiatives, they were able to restore much of the land. Additionally, Costa Rica has a goal to decarbonize its economy by 2050. While they have many ambitious goals, these goals and initiatives are what make Costa Rica stand out as a leader in sustainability.
I look forward to seeing these initiatives in practice and specifically how they can sustainably produce coffee and bananas, while still maintaining forest coverage. I can’t wait to go to Costa Rica to experience the culture as well as see the beautiful wildlife and nature!
