Hey! My name is John McConnell and I am from Columbia, South Carolina. I’m a first-year computer engineering student in the Swanson School of Engineering (SSOE) at the University of Pittsburgh. I am also in the Frederick Honors College, and I am pursuing an honors undergraduate degree. At Pitt, I am involved in both the engineering and productions staffs at WPTS Radio, Pitt’s student-run radio station. Next semester I plan to get more involved with engineering-centered clubs like the Robotics and Automation Society, as I am interested in getting more hands-on experience that relates to my major. I got interested in computer engineering because I have always been fascinated by technology and how it works.
Outside of academics, I play the drums and a little guitar, and I love playing music with people. I like reading, watching movies and tv shows, playing video games, and hanging out with friends.
I am very excited to be going on the Plus3 program to the Netherlands for several reasons. Firstly, I am eager to learn more about sustainability and how the businesses we will be visiting approach it in different ways. I’ve always been somewhat interested in sustainability, but participating in this program has spiked my interest in it even more. Watching videos and learning about how the Netherlands handles its specific challenges is fascinating. Secondly, I am excited to go abroad and experience a new culture. I have traveled abroad a few times in the past, and it has been incredible every time. For example, when I went to Bosnia and Herzegovina, I learned so much about not only the history of the place, but also about the people there. I hope to learn and have more new experiences in the Netherlands. Lastly, I hope to create memories and make lasting connections personally, academically, and professionally.
