Hello! My name is Declan Brown, and I just finished my first year at the University of Pittsburgh’s College of Business Administration. I am planning to major in Accounting and Finance with a minor in Economics. I am a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, Men’s Rugby Club at Pitt, and Panther Equity. In my free time, I enjoy going to the gym, spending time with friends, and trying new things. I am very excited to be going on the Plus3 Costa Rica trip.
I am both impressed and inspired by Costa Rica’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The nation has numerous initiatives, such as the Payment for Environmental Services (PES) program, that have successfully reversed deforestation trends by substantial amounts. The country’s dedication does not just stop at reversing deforestation; it also extends into agriculture. Costa Rica’s coffee industry is a very large and crucial component of the country’s success. As a result, sustainable farming methods like shade-grown cultivation and organic fertilization provide high-quality beans while also protecting the biodiversity of the country. In addition, banana plantations are also working hard to adopt eco-friendly practices. Some plantations are even achieving carbon neutrality.
As a Pennsylvania native, participating in the Plus3 Costa Rica program was a goal of mine ever since I first learned about it at Pitt accepted students day back in high school. I am beyond excited to explore the country’s lush landscapes, immerse myself in the cultures of local communities, and learn more about how sustainable practices can coexist with economic development. Costa Rica will be a trip to remember, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to be able to dive into this new environment.
