Today we visited the University of Nicosia for some activities and were shown around a bit. We briefly visited the block which is UNIC’s version of the eatery kind of which was very cool and saw some students walking around. We had an introduction presentation which was very informational and helpful definitely to navigate the new and unfamiliar norms within Cyprus. Things like passing the border and social norms like being extra careful when crossing the street because drivers here aren’t as hesitant to pedestrians. After the introduction presentation, we were shown a presentation on some of the foods in Cyprus and the traditional “meze” which is a meal of many small dishes. Some of the cold appetizers included in meze is a village salad and you can also have Tzatziki or Talattouri (flavored yogurt dip). Some main foods in meze include Moussaka, Keftedes, and stuffed Calamari which is definitely something I want to try. Then some of the desert we learned were Halouvas which are semolina cream enriched with aromatic syrup and also Dactila which are called lady fingers based on their shape and they are almonds wrapped in sweet pastry. We then were able to sample some foods including a salad with the Tzatziki dip along with bread, cheese, and prosciutto which I really enjoyed the most out of all the meals but we also had some meatballs, eggs and zucchini, pita bread, and Mac and cheese with the Halloumi cheese.
