Day 1: First Impressions of Ho Chi Minh

Today marked our very first day in Vietnam, and it’s already been an unforgettable experience. We started the day with a delicious bowl of complimentary pho at our hotel. Shortly after, we had our measurements taken for traditional Vietnamese attire and suits, which was an early fun and unique cultural experience.

What stood out the most today was the overwhelming warmth and hospitality we received at the University of Economics and Finance (UEF). From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with gifts, smiling faces, and live performances. It was such an energetic and heartfelt welcome, and it truly aligned with what we read in the Culture Smart book about Vietnamese hospitality. Their generosity and enthusiasm excited me for what I hope will be a meaningful and immersive journey.

During the Ho Chi Minh City tour, I noticed familiar fast-food chains and international hotel brands, which made the new environment feel surprisingly familiar. At our welcome meal, the hospitality and atmosphere of the restaurant really impressed me.

At the welcome lunch and dinner the hospitality of the servers really impressed me. The restaurant’s atmosphere felt both traditional and hospitable, creating a welcoming space for us as visitors. While the dishes themselves were delicious, the services from the staff and the meal made it feel very special.

So far, everything I’ve experienced seems similar to what we learned in the Culture Smart book, especially the emphasis on hosting guests with sincerity and pride. Today has been a great introduction to Vietnam, and I’m already looking forward to everything else this country has to offer.
