Day two already! We first started off by heading to the Bilbao School of Engineering once again. We learned about the school and got to play a Kahoot about some fun facts about the city of Bilbao.

Three of the clubs of the school were presented to us. The first one we visited was similar to our Panther Racing at Pitt. The group created an electric Formula 1 car every year from scratch to compete in 2 competitions. The money to buy materials for the car is made completely through money from sponsors, and students are able to buy the necessary equipment to create the project. It was interesting to compare their car to Pitt’s. Their car has a 0-100km of 4.0 seconds; however, it is capable of 3.0 seconds, which is Pitt’s 0-100km. The next club we visited was their STREAM program, which is a program that created sustainable electric guitars. They take recycled parts to make electric guitars. I found out I didn’t realize how complicated electric guitars are. The pickups of the guitar are the main part that allows the electric guitars to have their sound amplified. It consists of a magnet and an inductor, and they set the magnetism by using transformers from two recycled microwaves. We got to see some of our other students play the made guitars, which surprised everyone. The last club we went to was similar to Pitt’s rocket launch club. They showed their rocket, which was almost 3 meters tall, and showed some of their past rockets as well. They explained how they’re trying to reach the line between the atmosphere and space and showed some of their new improvements to the thruster and the body they made to try and break their current record of 9000 meters.

After visiting all the clubs, we visited the old town side of Bilbao. We learned about the flood that happened in 1983 and how it used to be industrial before the Guggenheim effect. Our day ended off there, but many students decided to stay in old town to explore and have some pintxos!
