Elevating Probiotics

Today’s adventures kicked off bright and early at 8:30 AM, starting with a visit to Fredit—one of the largest probiotic yogurt factories in Korea. After breakfast, we dove right into the production process, learning how yogurt is made on-site—from the creation of the yogurt itself to the manufacturing and recycling of the bottles. It was fascinating to see how environmentally conscious the entire system is.

One of the most interesting parts of the tour was learning about the “yogurt ladies”—women who sell yogurt from fully stocked carts stationed all over Korea. Many of them have regular customers and actually bring in more sales than retail markets! To wrap up the visit, we sampled three different yogurt drinks and even received a goodie bag to take with us—definitely a sweet way to end the tour.

Next up was lunch at a cozy little restaurant that specialized in tofu. While I wasn’t the biggest fan, I always appreciate the chance to try something new. And thanks to Professor Yun and Chris, we capped it off with some ice cream from a local convenience store!

After another hour-long bus ride, we arrived at TK Elevator—one of the world’s leading elevator manufacturers. Fun fact: the very hotel we’re staying in uses one of their elevators! The visit started in their company lounge, which featured various games I assume are used during breaks.

Then came the exciting part: we were taken up to the 40th floor of their testing tower, where we learned how elevators are tested for safety and performance. Contrary to popular belief, most elevator-related accidents aren’t from falls, but from electrical malfunctions. We even got to simulate an elevator drop ourselves—with a ball pit to catch us at the bottom! It may have been a tame day, but it was still loads of fun.
