Yet again, today was filled with cultural and educational experiences! We got two great talks about biomedical engineering, as well as my favorite cultural experience on the trip so far.
Today, we got to listen to two very distinguished professors, Dr. Harvey Borovetz and Saioa (our contact at the Bilbao School of Engineering). They both talked about what they are creating in biomedical engineering research. Saioa spoke about her current project, which helps people recovering from strokes regain their balance. It is able to find the center of pressure and compare it to the center of mass in these recovering patients. We will have the opportunity to see this in person tomorrow at our hospital visit, which is very exciting. Dr. Borovetz spoke about a pediatric heart pump, for children with heart disease. He described how these children were not represented well with the current options available for treating this. It was fascinating to learn about the process he took, however shocking for how long FDA approval takes. The potential of this product was amazing, and it really makes me consider trying to find work in an electrical engineering position that is somehow involved in a medical product.
Then this afternoon, we went to the Guggenheim Museum. It was not at all what I was expecting from an art museum, but in the best way possible. There were so many traditional and non-traditional exhibits, all of which were very thought provoking. Lots of advanced technology is used in the museum, including two exhibits that feature Artificial Intelligence, which were probably my favorite. It was similar to an IMAX theatre, with projectors everywhere that had constantly flowing images on the screen. It was representing AIs process in creating images that mimicked Guggenheims architectural work, which was fascinating. This museum greatly increased my appreciation for art, as well as architecture and design (which is art in itself).
In conclusion, today was very well-rounded, with a lot of experiences I will not forget anytime soon.
