Day 5: Sam Cook Cooks!

Today we were able to make our very own pintxos for lunch! We made Gildas and Bilbanitos, both of which are traditional Basque pintxos. I had so much fun making these and then eating them myself, although I think my favorite was the Bilbanito which was shrimp egg and mayo. For our main course we made a traditional Spanish tortilla which is kinda similar to a frittata. I was even able to make it on the stove myself! I mixed together the egg, potato, and onion and then poured it into the pan on the stove. I was also in charge of flipping the dish on both sides to ensure proper cooking, which was a little scary to be honest. But I think the dish turned out great and I was so happy I was able to make it myself. Then for desert we made Goxua, a typical basque dish similar to creme brulee. We assembled the dish ourselves and then devoured them. Overall I had a very positive experience and feel like I learned more about traditional Basque dishes, hopefully I can re-create them at home!

Pintxos I made

After we visited the Ribera market and I got a delicious cafe con leche (latte). The market was quite beautiful and extremely clean. It had beautiful stained glass windows and many different food markets. To end our day we visited Mount Artxanda via the Funicular! We were able to see breathtaking views of the city from the top of the mountain. From so high up the city honestly seemed much bigger than I thought it was. I feel as though this is a very walkable city and not too large, but from above it seemed lager, in terms of area, than I thought it would be. It was nice to take a break from all of the medical terminology and learn more about the unique Basque culture today!
