Clouds Over Campus

Today, we spent most of the day at Yonsei University, and it rained the whole time. Despite the constant downpour, the experience was both eye-opening and enjoyable. We started off with lunch, where I had a bowl of spicy chicken soup. It was the perfect meal for such a chilly and wet day- warm, flavorful, and definitely one of the highlights of the afternoon.

After lunch, we began our tour of Yonsei. The campus was beautiful, even through the mist and rain. We learned that Yonsei is one of the top universities in South Korea, with over 25,000 undergraduate students currently enrolled. One fact that stood out to me was that all freshmen attend a separate campus entirely. If they need to visit the main campus, they have to take a bus ride that takes about an hour. That seems so strange compared to how most schools in the U.S. are set up.

We visited both the business school and the engineering school during our tour. As a business student, I found it especially cool to see how a university on the other side of the world approaches education and design. We then took a tour of the Cheong lab, where they are studying the thalamus of the brain. To study this, they take the brains of mice and slice them into little pieces to examine them. Even though I didn’t really know what all the tools were, it was cool to be in the lab and see all the different equipment.

To wrap up the day, we made the 20-minute journey to McDonald’s in the never-ending rain. But this wasn’t just any McDonald’s—we got to try items not available in the U.S., like McWings and mozzarella sticks. It was a fun and delicious way to end the day.
