Day 4 – From Microchips to Medieval Streets in Regensburg

This morning, we visited Continental, a company known for its role in automotive innovation. After a bit of a delay getting through security, we started with a talk from a project manager who walked us through their efforts to increase efficiency and expand automation. It was fascinating to learn how something as small as a microchip can power so many functions in a modern vehicle. I’ve only known Continental for their tires, and learning about all the other things they produce for vehicles was fascinating.

Before entering the production area, we had to wear protective gear and go through a static test, which immediately made the visit feel very high-tech and controlled compared to the MAN factory yesterday. Inside, the facility was incredibly clean and precise. Watching the manufacturing process in action, especially how robots and humans worked together, was impressive. Continental produces around half a million chips daily, which is hard to wrap your head around.

After a great lunch at the company cafeteria, where I tried the currywurst, we headed to Regensburg. After arriving, we toured the historic Old Town Hall, where we learned about Regensburg’s past as a center of politics and justice. The underground jail and torture chamber were intense but gave a unique glimpse into medieval history.

During our free time, I visited the Regensburg Cathedral (Dom), a massive, Gothic-style church that completely blew me away. The scale of it, the stained glass, and the peaceful atmosphere made it one of the most awe-inspiring places I’ve ever stepped into. Before we regrouped, I grabbed a salted caramel gelato and walked around the city in the sun. All in all, today was a perfect blend of innovation and culture.
