A Dose of Politics

Our day began around 10am today which was a later start than usual. We met with IES Abroad, where Dr. Gabriel Novak, the former Minister of Health and current director of Swiss Medical, hosted a review session on the Argentina healthcare system for us. He was able to address any lingering questions and offered insightful clarifications on topics such as the financing model, unions and more. Right now, big unions are now competing with private companies. In some cases, these unions have become revolving doors for money, retaining up to 10% of everything that passes through them.

Following the session, we took the bus over to the Museo Evita Restaurant, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch that started with a sweet arugula salad. Afterwards we had a guided tour of the Museo Evita, which provided a rich overview of Eva Peron’s life and legacy. Our guide led us through exhibits featuring personal items, photographs and videos that emphasized Evita’s political influence, humanitarian efforts and impact she had on Argentina’s society.

Fact of the day: Evita Peron, second wife of Argentina president Juan Peron, became a very powerful political leader especially respected by those of the lower class. She helped with a number of reforms and policies to help the lower classes but also was a big part of bringing about Argentina’s women’s suffrage law.
