Day 7 – Interesting Food and Villages

The first place that we went today was Bukchon Village. This is a traditional village in Seoul which actually still has people living in it. It was incredible to see the structures that have been maintained for so long still be in use. It was clear that this was a big tourist spot because the streets were flooded with people taking pictures of the great views that the village offered. After some time at the village we made our way to downtown Seoul to visit Jogyesa Temple. This is a temple downtown which is incredibly intergraded into the modern infrastructure. This is a Buddhist temple and there were active monks and Buddhists praying at this temple. The views in the temple were incredible and provided so much color and history to a rather bland part of the city.

After this tour we were technically given free time but me and some people stayed with Dr Yun to walk down the Namdaemun river. This river was beautiful and made the walk so peaceful even though we were in a huge city. During our walk we stopped by the Namdaemun market to grab some food. Dr Yun had us try some very questionable food here that he enjoys. The first food he had us try was chicken feet. These were very chewy and spicy. Surprisingly they were very tasty and I found myself enjoying them very much. The really interesting food that we tried was live squid. Apparently this is very traditional for Koreans to eat squid while it is still alive and moving. It was such a weird feeling since it was still moving when I picked it up to eat and while it was in my mouth. I enjoyed the squid very much actually which was surprising to me. We finished our walk with Dr Yun after grabbing some milk ice cream and went on our own. We kept walking and found a fortress in downtown Seoul that we climbed up. This was a hike to say the least and took some time to find our way back down the hill. At this point in the day it was getting to be dinner time and Dr Yun recommended this Italian place called Mad for Garlic. It was a journey but we finally arrived and I got the best lasagna ever. Shortly after eating we arrived to the hotel. After a day full of walking and travel I was wiped and went right to bed. Thanks for reading and I am excited for tomorrow!
