Day 8: Ports

This morning we visited our first port! This was my first time ever seeing huge machines and crates at work so close to me, I only ever saw them in movies. I learned so much import information on supply chain management from each company today. The Limassol Port is made up of four companies that operate Cyprus’ imports and exports within it, Cyprus Port Authority, DP World, P&O and Eurogate. We listened to presentations from each company then got tours for each of their sections within the port. It is so interesting how each company operates in the same port with the amount of coordination and effort needed to put into their jobs. Being in a port, the distribution process is by boat. Since Cyprus is an island, this is the most convenient mode of distribution.

First we listened to CPA. They are a governmental organization responsible for the development, management and operation for ports of the country. It oversees port operations, ensures maritime safety and coordinates efficient cargo and passenger transport. Something I found interesting about this company was they are also the national lighthouse authority which is responsible for the management, maintenance, and operation to aid the navigation systems. The next company is DP World. They handle cargo, cruise ships, and logistics for the offshore energy industry which makes Limassol a key regional hub. P&O handles towage, pilotage, and offshore support which makes sure the ships get into the port safely and efficiently. The last company we visited was Eurogate, who works on the shipment of cargo. They operate 24/7 and manage up to 12,000 TEUs. Cyprus gets mainly imports but sends out exports as well. It was so cool to tour the ports and see it working in real time!
