Day 8: Prime Ports

Today we woke up bright and early and went straight to the ports. We got to visit four companies, all located in the same area of Cyprus. Cyprus is a prime location for importing and exporting goods. The first company we visited was Cyprus Port Authority which is responsible for port facilities. Then we saw DP world which has a global presence which docks not only items but also cruise ships. They have the infrastructure to accommodate for the large cruise docking. One thing that I really liked about the guy who presented was the importance of be adaptable. Combined with the DP World, we then saw the P&O Maritime which they help with the marine logistics making sure the boats dock correctly. P&O handle what happens in the water and DP World deals which the transferring of the items from sea to land.

Lastly, Eurogate took over in Cyprus in 2017. They were founded in 1999 and are a global company as well. When we went to Eurogate, we were able to see the TEUs being grabbed by machine and being clipped in. We got to see it get transferred from land and interlock with the other TEUs on the ship. It was so cool to see all the units that had fans set to certain temperature in order to make sure the product was fresh and at the right temperature. If the product was not up to the regulated temperature, then the product would need to be destroyed. I really enjoyed hearing about the process of how the companies handle bringing the ships in. DP world mentioned that they have about 7-10 ships that are docked daily. Overall, each of the companies had their process and their pros to staying competitive in the shipping and docking market.
