Day 9 – Camp Casey and Hike

The first thing on our itinerary today was visiting Camp Casey which is a US military base in South Korea. We are fortunate enough to have two alumni that are stationed here. Grace and Will were nice enough to give us a tour of the camp and what they do from a day to day basis. Grace showed us around the motorpool which she is in charge of. The machines and equipment they use at these bases are very advance and it is impressive how the soldiers know them inside and out. One specific piece of machinery we were shown was a striker. These strikers are large tank like vehicles which patrol battle grounds for chemical samples which they send to the labs. This gives the army insight on dangerous chemicals that might be in the area for the safety of the army. After these tours we got to walk to the cafe where we got lunch. They had a lot of great lunch options with a lot of them being American food. I got a buffalo chicken calzone which was definitely a needed taste of home after all the kimchi and noodles so far this trip. Being able to tour Camp Casey was a special treat and a unique experience that I would get no where else.

After the Camp we went on a hike up Soyosan mountain. This was a short but pretty trail that led up to a Buddhist Temple. Korea is home to a lot of trails in the mountain range which all offer great views and greenery. I find it interesting how many older people I saw on this trail. Even on the streets it seems like the older population of Korea are very active and in shape. This hike was so peaceful and rewarding since it was a pretty decent workout. After this I am interested in doing more hikes in the future. Once we got back to the hotel I got dinner at a Korean BBQ place. The dish we got was 4 different cuts of meat which were so tasty and tender. This meal was one of the best I’ve had on this trip for sure. The last thing we did today was go to the Coex mall and do some shopping and walking around. Thanks for reading my blog and I am looking forward to tomorrow!
