Day 9: Super Strong Cement

By far one of the most interesting company visits so far, Vassiliko Cement Company is focused on the production of cement, which is used to make a variety of forms of concrete. Our visit began with a presentation on how Vassiliko Cement mines raw materials and refines them into a manufacturing product, which is then turned into a final product for consumers. One particularly interesting aspect of Vassiliko Cement is that it operates as a highly vertically integrated company. This means they do not rely heavily on external suppliers, instead, they own and manage multiple elements of the supply chain. In the case of Vassiliko, they control everything from mining raw materials, refining the materials through heat treatment, producing and distributing the final product through their own port. If they were to rely on othed companies for these processes, everything would be much less efficient. This level of vertical integration allows Vassiliko Cement to maintain quality control, reduce costs, and operate more efficiently.
