Day 9: One Company, One Chain

Today, we explored Vassiliko Cement, a company that clearly demonstrates a vertically integrated operation. This means they control all stages of their supply chain from the raw materials to final distribution. Firstly, Vassiliko runs its quarry, removing limestone and other raw materials directly from the earth. This removes the need to purchase materials from other suppliers and gives the company full control over the quality and cost of the stone. Next, I learned that the company hosts the entire cement production process on-site, such as crushing raw materials, operating kilns for clinker production, and blending different materials to produce cement. This process allows the company to adjust certain processes based on market demand or the quality of the product. Also, the company has its own private port, providing direct import of fuel materials like coal, and the export of cement and clinker to international markets. Vassiliko manages its own packaging facilities, which allow it to release finished cement products to both domestic and international customers. This ensures control over timing and their delivery quality. Overall, Vassiliko Cement represents a high degree of vertical integration through complete control over cost, operations, supply chain, and maintaining its competitive advantage in all markets.
