Today, we were visiting the demilitarized zone (DMZ) and attending the Kiwoon Heroes vs. Samsung Lions baseball game. To get to the DMZ, we had to drive far north to near the border. After traveling for around an hour and a half, we stopped at a local Korean restaurant which served a stew with hot dog, spam, sausage, and vegetables. This was probably one of my least favorite meals on this trip, but I was very hungry so I did not waste any of it. The food wasn’t too bad, especially after adding in the noodles that the worker gave to us to throw into the pot at the end. After filling up on lunch, we neared the DMZ info center where I got a gift for my dad at a neighboring souvenir shop. Then, we boarded the DMZ shuttle bus for the tour around the area as we approached the third tunnel, where North Korean soldiers tried to plan a sneak attack through the tunnels into Seoul. We got to enter the tunnels and go down into the bottom level of the shaft which was an awesome experience. After the tunnel, we went to the observatory. This was the closest we were to the border and normally, we would be able to see out of the glass int North Korea’s land, but it was very foggy, so we could not see at all.
Finally, we got to the baseball game, which was held within a giant dome at the Kiwoon Heroes’ home park. I was so impressed with the fans’ engagement throughout the game. Each team would have a cheer team dance and lead the crowd every single inning when their team was batting. I noticed the level of entertainment they try to bring into those games, involving the entire crowd. At halftime, I got a delicious mango ice cream and Korean Fried chicken. Although the game was slow at first, it went into extra innings, and the Samsung Lions ended up winning the game with a huge 4-run 11th inning.
