Today, we visited Vassiliko Cement Works, which is the largest cement company in Europe. This is very significant because over 25 billion tons of concrete are consumed by the world every year, making it the second most consumed material in the world behind water. In order for this company to properly function, the raw materials need to go through the cement production process, which consists of quarrying, crushing, pre-blending, grinding, preheating, clinker production, clinker storage, cement grinding, cement storage, and finally transitioning to the local market or exports. Additionally, VCW builds and operates cement and clinker exports at Vassiliko Port. Some of these exports include clinker, cement, and scrap metal while the imports include coal, pet-coke, additional fuels, and white cement. This can be considered a vertically integrated company because they do every step of the supply chain all by themselves, transitioning the raw material all the way into a final product and transporting it to the customer.
