Hi! My name is Meredith Mitchell and I am from Bernardsville, New Jersey. I am majoring in nursing and plan to graduate the spring of 2029. I did not plan to go into nursing until the summer going into my senior year of high school when I read the memoir The In Between by Hadley Vlahos. Despite originally planning to major in something to do with music, reading her memoir changed my mind completely. Her stories were so inspiring and I fell in love with the idea of being able to help others during some of their most uncertain or darkest times. I am not sure what type of nurse I want to be yet, but I do know that I want to have the ability to make an impact on my patients and have that human to human interaction.
Outside of academics, I love spending time with my family and friends, listening/playing music, traveling, working out, and being outside. I am the oldest sister to my sister and brother and I have two dogs at home, Penny and Koda. I spend my summers with my family and cousins at the Jersey Shore and work at an ice cream shop called Sundae Best. Even though I decided to pursue nursing rather than a music career, my love for music stands strong. When I am home, I love playing my favorite songs on guitar as well as learning new songs. Additionally, I ran cross country and track all through high school and continue to run now as a hobby.
In May, I will be going to Birmingham for the Plus3 United Kingdom program. I have always enjoyed visiting new places, but this is a new aspect of traveling that I have not yet had the opportunity to take on. When I found out that I could have the chance to visit a new place with other Pitt students while also gaining new education, I knew I wanted to apply. Personally, I want to continue to grow by expanding my perspective and knowledge on the world. Gaining new perspective is extremely important in order to stay grounded and understand those around us. Having this experience will also allow me to become a step closer to being the nurse I hope to be, who will take the time to make sure her patients are understood and feel safe. I will also have the opportunity to grow academically by gaining hands-on experience when we go into the schools and potentially healthcare settings. Putting my knowledge into action will help to connect all that I have already learned in school with my future career in nursing. I am so excited to explore Birmingham and to do so with an amazing group of hardworking students! See you in Birmingham!
