Buenos Bound!

Hi! My name is Riley Moss. I am a freshman nursing major at the University of Pittsburgh. I am also in the Frederick Honors College, and I plan to complete a Global Health Certificate alongside my degree. I grew up about 30 minutes outside of Pittsburgh in a suburb. Outside of school, I enjoy working out, traveling, and hanging out with my family and friends. During my first year of nursing school, I have been introduced to anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and the basics of patient care, which has started to shape how to think in clinical situations and approach problem-solving. As I continue through this program, I want to keep building those skills and become confident in high-pressure environments. After graduation, I plan to work in the ICU, with the long-term goal of becoming a nurse anesthetist.

This summer, I will be participating in the Plus3 program in Argentina, which focuses on healthcare management. I chose this program because I want to understand how healthcare systems operate outside of the United States, especially in a country where public, private, and social security sectors all play a role in delivering care. Through visits to hospitals, clinics, and organizations like Universidad Austral, I will be able to see how healthcare is managed, funded, and accessed in a system that faces different economic and structural challenges. Personally, I want to push myself outside of my comfort zone by living in a new environment. Academically, I am interested in connecting what I learn in nursing to real-world healthcare systems. Professionally, this experience will help me become more adaptable and better prepared to work in a high-acuity setting like the ICU as I work toward becoming a nurse anesthetist. I was also awarded the Gilman Scholarship, which supports my ability to study abroad and my interest in learning about healthcare systems beyond the United States.
