The Approach to Athens

on

Hello, my name is Ian Kloiber. I am a first-year Electrical Engineering student at Pitt, and I am also enrolled in the Frederick Honors College. I am from Rochester, NY, which is about a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Pittsburgh in upstate New York. I am the middle child, with an older and a younger sister. Outside of academics, I enjoy exercising, playing card games, and hanging out with friends. Additionally, during my time at Pitt so far, I have become heavily involved with our FSAE team. I am on the High Voltage team, where I help design and build our battery pack. I have also joined the Pittsburgh chapter of Triangle Fraternity. Along with getting involved, I want to take advantage of as many opportunities as I can while at Pitt. One of these is going abroad through the Plus3 program.

My Plus3 location is Athens, Greece, with a subject area specializing in supply chain management, shipping, and logistics. Initially, we were supposed to travel to Cyprus, but due to international politics, and thanks to the graciousness of the University of Nicosia, we were able to pivot to Athens and continue the program. The topics that this program will cover interest me because I want to learn how companies function and how the world we take for granted operates behind the scenes. This program will allow me to explore these interests outside of a typical classroom setting through a more hands-on approach, which I enjoy. I am also interested in the industrial engineering aspect because, even though I am an electrical engineer interested in developing technology and PCB design, learning about other engineering disciplines can improve my overall skills and make me a more well-rounded person. Becoming more well-rounded will allow me to be a better engineer by providing a greater breadth of experience. This leads into what I wish to gain from this program.

I want to become the most well-rounded engineer I can be while at Pitt. This is why I joined FSAE, which has allowed me to learn interdisciplinary skills that I can apply to a vast array of situations. I hope to achieve the same through Plus3. I want to learn industrial engineering and management skills that will allow me to become a better engineer and a better person. Along with this, I want to create connections with my fellow travelers and make lifelong friends. Going forward, I want to leverage what Plus3 teaches me to develop my networking skills and ultimately secure an internship or job in the future. I look forward to the trip and am very thankful for this opportunity.
