Hello! My name is Katie and I am a first year Bioengineering student from Leechburg, Pennsylvania (a small town about 45 minutes from Pittsburgh). I am on the Cellular Engineering track with an intended minor in Chemistry and a certificate in Conceptual Foundations of Medicine. With this, I plan to pursue a career in laboratory sciences through professional academic research or a medical laboratory position. I currently am an undergraduate researcher in the Starzl Transplant Institute where we are aiming to prevent rejection and improve long-term survival of transplanted organs, especially without the use of immunosuppressive drugs!
Outside of academics, I love to try new foods and restaurants, visit different zoos (I love animals!), and play with my 5 dogs at home. Although I frequently travel within the United States, this will be my first time outside of the country!
Plus3 Spain immediately drew me in as I have always been fascinated by aspects of our world that have developed independently without the influence of others. The Basque region of Spain is an idea representation of that since not only their language, but also their healthcare system stands independent from any others. Through this program, I hope to gain insight on the methods that a healthcare system that evolved independently uses and how they differ from the methods we are familiar with. I am also looking forward to gaining different insight on topics from our nursing majors as well as professionals in Spain. Overall, I cannot wait to experience Spain and truly take in all that comes with a first abroad experience!
