Behind the Scenes at The Ellinikon

Today’s schedule was packed, starting with a tour of Athens’ historical district, followed by some free time in Plaka. After enjoying an amazing lunch with my group, we got on the bus and headed to our company visit with LAMBDA Development.

A large part of this visit was spent learning how the Ellinikon project incorporates Building Information Modeling/Management (BIM) systems into construction. BIM helps organize and visualize much of the data and logistics for the project, such as models of the finished development, construction timelines, costs, and facility management. The presenters explained that many countries, including the USA, mandate this approach for engineering projects like the Ellinikon.

We were also introduced to software utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to view different aspects of the project, including utilities, weather resistance, and stockpile volume. I see technology like this becoming much more prevalent in the future, so I appreciate that they took the time to familiarize us with what will most likely be a major part of engineering by the time I enter the workforce.
