Gus Coleman – Day 1: Arriving in Buenos Aires

We arrived at the Buenos Aires airport at around 11:00 in the morning after an overnight flight. First we checked into the hotel and then we went to have a welcome Lunch hosted by the IES Abroad company. They served us steak, vegetables, potatoes, and sausage. The steak came with a chimi-churi sauce and it was very good. Next we went back to the hotel, and took a little break to relax. Then me and a couple of guys went to walk around the nearby park which was very pleasant. We ended up meeting with a couple of girls who found a local cafe. After that, we met up with the group leader, Grant, who took us around the city and we ended up at a church. Then, me and the rest of the group walked around looking for a place to have dinner. Half the group went to get empanadas, and me and the rest of the group went to try a highly rated pizza spot called Guerrin. The restaurant was huge and the pizza was great. It was loaded with cheese and was very tasty.

My first impression of Argentina is that it is very beautiful architecturally and atmosphere wise. All of the people were very friendly and helpful, and there was a very present sense of community. When walking around we saw a lot of monuments and art pieces which showed off Argentina’s culture. The streets were very wide and there were bakeries on every corner. We ended up in what looked like an Italian district which was lined with a lot of Italian restaurants. While walking through the streets we saw a lot of large buildings both old and new. The food, the architecture, and the culture all combined in such a way that surpassed my expectations. I was initially tired from the long flight, but I was rejuvenated by the Argentinian spirit.

A downside to the start of the trip however, was the fact that it fell on the same day as mothers day. I would like to express my sadness for missing out on celebrating my mom. She is my favorite person in the world and I would not be where I am today without her. She was the one who helped me go on this trip in the first place, so I want to thank you mom.
