Day 6: A Hospital as Beautiful as a Museum

Day 6 was a great day in Bilbao. We started off the day by walking to Hospital Basurto, a hospital located directly in the city of Bilbao. A unique aspect of this hospital is that it is not one large building like we have in the United States. It is instead a collection of smaller buildings where the different specialties are located. An even more unique aspect is that all of the buildings are connected through underground tunnels! This allows patients to be transported from building to building in inadequate weather.

The visit began with presentations from nurses and a bioengineer that work at the hospital. We then started the tour of the hospital, and I can easily say it was one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. We started in the pediatric emergency room where we talked with a pediatrician who explained the logistics of the room. All of the supplies in the room were extremely well organized to allow for the most efficient treatment. Next, we visited the labor and delivery unit where we talked to a midwife. In Spain, midwife nurses deliver babies primarily by themselves instead of an OBGYN physician delivering the baby. After, we went to the NICU and were given an extremely informative tour of all of the medical devices that the doctors and nurses use on a daily basis. We then toured the laboratory building where we saw all of the specialized labs for different testing and then went to the tunnels to see all of the technical aspects that keep the hospital running.

Following our hospital visit, we went through the Guggenheim museum. This was an absolutely beautiful building on the inside and out. It featured many impressive exhibits and was a great way to wind down Day 6 in Spain!
