The Truths Behind Myths

Today we toured Korinthos canal, Nafplio, Epidavros. These were beautiful sites to see having some of the better preserved buildings from the past. However, today was the last day we see Demetri, our tour guide. Demetri has been with us for all of our culture visits, bestowing upon the vast information he has gained over his 25 years of touring experience. It was great listening to him add fun facts or jokes throughout the trip and it’s quite sad to see him leave us. However, within those fun facts was a idea that he brought up that has stuck with me throughout this trip. He said, not verbatim, that myths are just an exaggerated story that, with time, can be brought down to its actuality, but the message is still the same. This has me not only rethink about the Greek mythology stories I know, but every religious story I know. This has taught me that everything we know could just be a exaggerated story, but the message is still the same and that’s okay. The point of the mythological story is to convey a lesson, not an accurate description of the events.
