A Productive Day at Piraeus

on

Today we visited Piraeus Container Terminal (PCT) at Piraeus Port. It is currently operated by COSCO Shipping, as part of the 2009 concession agreement between Greece and China, which will last 35 years. to implement piers two and three. It is one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean, with a capacity of 6.2 million TEU. Despite being operated by COSCO, the port also works with 15-20 other shipping companies. The port is also a deep-sea port, so deep that to build the piers, blocks needed to be dropped into the water, in contrast to usual ports needing to dig further to accommodate the size of the vessels. The port serves both large mother vessels that cross oceans with a high capacity, and smaller feeder vessels. It was really interesting to see all of the massive ships, cranes, and rows upon rows of containers lined up to be loaded and unloaded. It was also cool to learn about the tracking technology that PCT uses to make sure that everything runs smoothly and goals are met each day.
