Today we visited the Piraeus Port Container Terminal and viewed the operation through our bus. There are two main piers (#2 and #3) where the majority of the operation takes place, with capacity for both mother vessels (20,000+ TEUs) for open ocean shipments and feeder vessels (1000+ TEUs) for Mediterranean trade. There were lots of cranes, including semi-autonomous, which help the cargo containers get loaded on the ships. One interesting fact that got brought up is that the majority of cargo shipments are transferred from one ship to another for further trade, rather than being unloaded into Athens. Also, the port was very high security, as it is technically a free international customs area rather than part of Greece, which I also found interesting.
