Day 11: Tekniker, Painted Forest, and Gernika!!

on

Today was a busy but great day in Bilbao!! We started off how we started off everyday, with a delicious breakfast in the hotel before hopping on a bus for a company visit to an engineering firm, Tekniker! The company was built on a beautiful mountain, and the building overlooked the foggy Basque countryside, which was quiet and refreshing. We got a really interesting presentation on their whole company and got a tour, which included seeing all their facilities as well as their recreational facilities including their rock climbing wall and gym! My favorite part of the tour was seeing their giant 3D printer, which was super cool! We also saw a car built for one person, which I thought was amazing, and I wish I had a car that small for parallel parking on my drivers test. Overall, the visit was amazing and I loved seeing all of their technology and startups!

After the company visit, we hopped back on the bus to head to Bosque de Oma, which is the Painted Forest! We thought it would originally be a leisurely walk so many of us were still in our business casual and nice outfits, but quickly realized that it was a 4 mile hike through muddy trails. Safe to say the white sneakers aren’t white anymore and clothes were washed in the bathtub afterwards(some pants did not survive). Besides all the mud, it was a really fun hike with friends and the painted trees were so beautiful! We also got to enjoy some delicious sandwiches when we got to the top of the mountain from Saioa! Once we finished the hike, we hopped back on the bus to drive to another town called Gernika! When we got there, our amazing tour guide M’angel took us to see the portion of the painting “Guernica” by Pablo Picasso that was in the town, as well as getting a super interesting tour of the whole town, including the parliament building and some cool statues and other buildings. After our tour we stopped at a cafe for some pastries and coffee before bussing back to Bilbao. We were all pretty tired, so we got dinner at a local Mexican restaurant which was really yummy! After dinner, naturally we had to make a stop at our favorite shop in Bilbao, Gelati Gelati for our last gelato in Spain since tomorrow will be super busy! I got mango once again, which was absolutely delicious. We then headed back to the hotel for a chill night in and got to bed early before a busy last day! I am so sad that tomorrow is the last day, but am hoping to make it fantastic!
