Today we visited Paroissien Hospital and the Universidad Nacional de La Matanza. The hospital is public and run by the Province. They are funded a very small amount of money compared to San Isidro who are funded by municipalities and receive much more money. Due to the poor funding, Paroissen struggled with keeping the hospital up to date. They have flooding issues and construction problems. The place was very run down compared to the other hospitals we have seen over the past few days; we saw a cat inside which is extremely unsanitary and electrical wires known. They just built an ER last year and are creating a new ICU with 20 beds. We also do the morgue which was really unsettling that we were allowed in there. The municipality has 3 million people and this is the most popular hospital in the area. They struggle with keeping staff because a lot of them would rather go to a private hospital for more money. Nurses sometimes have to do administrative work because there’s only 1500 employees. They have about 300 beds and only one floor of the whole hospital. Unfortunately, this is a poor municipality and there’s less funding even though they get a significantly high amount of people. They didn’t have enough rooms and there were multiple beds in one room. We also met some nursing students that told us about their education system at the Universidad Nacional de La Matanza. The students go to different hospitals for clinicals. I found it interesting that not all nurses take the NCLEX and only some hospitals require it. They also get their BSN in 5 years and there’s 1000 nursing students at the university. Overall, I think it’s sad that places like Paroissien don’t get a lot of funding even though they see so many patients.
