Today, we had our first three site visits, starting with my group’s site, Technopark Casablanca. Finally being able to see the two big towers with the connecting bridge was captivating. Being able to actually visit the site that we have done so much research on gave me a completely different perspective on entrepreneurship and innovation in Morocco.
The thing I respect most about Technopark is how they manage to attract foreign investment while still prioritizing Moroccan projects. It is not just office space they are offering, but also full access to immense networks, government funding, and cutting-edge technology. This project shows an intense level of dedication to technological innovation. This same theme was also present in the other site visits we attended. One of my program instructors mentioned a great point: when you hear about all of these developments, you start to notice many correlations between them. I believe this connects to Morocco’s major goals, because many of their projects seem very forward-looking compared to the U.S., where many industries feel more stagnant outside of AI.
During the presentation, I was very curious about how Technopark positions itself to receive so much foreign investment, especially since industries like FinTech in Nigeria are leading in Africa. I asked how the company markets itself to foreign partnerships, and the speaker replied by saying that it is mainly due to the attraction of the project itself. It is not something they are forcing onto investors; it is something investors genuinely want to be a part of. You can clearly see this through the amount of expansion and growth Technopark has experienced, as well as how they have been able to add even more sites across Morocco. It also helps that they are funded by both the American company Plug and Play Tech Center and the Moroccan government.
When I was researching Technopark beforehand, I imagined it would just be similar to incubator and accelerator spaces in the U.S., but after speaking to one of the entrepreneurs there, my whole perspective changed. When we asked her about her main reason for joining Technopark, she explained that it was because of the strong network that allowed her to scale her AI business. We were also able to ask her about some weaknesses within the organization, which gave us a much better understanding of possible opportunities for our SWOT recommendations.
