Today, we began with another visit back to POSTECH, where students gave us a campus tour. Even though we already saw the campus yesterday, we primarily focused on the higher level labs. It was fun to see it from a student closer to my age’s perspective, and I enjoyed talking to my guide. He spoke english very fluently and was into american culture and media. He was also an ECE student, so we had enough to talk about and he did a great job showing us around.
After leaving POSTECH, we went straight to POSCO facilities. We started with the POSCO museums, which were pretty similar to the Samsung museum but felt less like an ad and more like a learning opportunity. We began by going into a giant room with projectors everywhere that played all kinds of cool animations. Most of them were steelmaking and element related, and the cool part was they would adapt to where people were walking. Spotlights would automatically follow footsteps, water would flow around people, and more theme related animations. After this, we watched an interesting video that I assume is a longer version of a POSCO commercial. It showed what I interpereted as POSCOS vision for the future. It had included lots of interesting smart systems like smart cars, homes, and even suitcases that follow you around so you dont have to roll them. Afterwards, we walked through a section where they showed us a cool tile wall and displayed images and even a motion sensor and some of their steel products. The most impressive part was when they showed us a various set of materials but they were all made of steel, including a painting that also doubled as a speaker. At the end, they gave us a set of nail clippers and tweezers that seem to be pretty high quality.
After the museum, we went on a walk through one of POSCO’s factories and it was one of the coolest parts of the trip yet. We got to see steel being shaped in a fully automated factory. I don’t think I saw a single worker the entire time. A very interesting part was that you could feel how hot the steel was and feel it moving even though it was so far away.
