Tribal Living

We spent an unforgettable day with the tribe, starting with a visit to the massive ceiba trees, some of the largest trees in the Amazon. These trees hold great importance within the community, serving as gathering places, scouting locations, and spaces where stories are passed down through generations. Listening to the matriarch of the tribe share one of these stories in person was incredible and gave us a glimpse into a history that stretches back centuries.

Afterward, we climbed jungle vines and swung through the forest like real-life Tarzan. Later, we went fishing, where I caught a tiny catfish that was fried up for dinner, and it was pretty good.

Following lunch, we headed into the village for a special naming ceremony. I was given the name “Kome,” named after one of the warriors from the tribe’s past. We painted ourselves with traditional markings and then played an intense game of soccer with the tribe… who were definitely much better than us.

After our fish fry dinner, we returned to the village to watch one of their traditional dances. In exchange, we shared a little bit of our own culture too, singing “Sweet Caroline” together and teaching them how to frat flick.

We finished the night by purchasing traditional weavings and jewelry handmade by members of the tribe, showcasing their incredible artistic talent and craftsmanship.

It was one of the most unique experiences of my life and something I’ll never forget. The Waorani people welcomed us so openly, and the experience really opened my eyes to how similar we all are despite living completely different lives.

Looking forward to finishing these last few days of the trip on a high note.

Until next time,
Matt Hay
