Day 9: Politics and Kuka

We started off today with a trip to the University of Augsburg where we got a lecture about German politics. I learned a lot about German politics; particularly that Angela Merkel is at the center right party called the Christian Democratic Union. It is also interesting that the Christian Democratic Union is really concerned about the AFD, which is a populist far right party that the country is concerned about. Bavaria has been consistently CDU, but the AFD has gained some ground here. The situation is very similar to the US.

The professor also mentioned how a University of Chicago professor wrote an article predicting everything that has so far. He said that since the left around the 1990s took their focus from what makes the most economic politics into cultural identity politics. From “here’s what benefits our country” into “this is why I’m better than you.” I found this very interesting.

After this we ate at Mensa, and the food was great again. I don’t know the name of what I had, but it was good. We then went to Kuka, a robotics manufacturer. We had a neat presentation about how the robotics work and how easily programmable they are. The robots then put on a neat little show by moving blocks around. We then got a powerpoint  about Kuka’s robotics and the industry at large. Robots have actually had a science fiction history dating back to the 1920s. They are very versatile, and they really help industries automate their production. We saw a tour of how they produce their robots, and they had a good amount of people working on the factory floor, but there were also some robots used to make the robots. That is actually mind blowing. IMG_1671.jpg
