Counting Down the Days

My name is Cameron Golden, and I am a first-year business student at The University of Pittsburgh! I grew up around ten minutes outside of Philadelphia in a town called Chestnut Hill. On campus, I am involved in the Fashion Business Association, Greek Life, and the Ski Club. I enjoy having these outlets outside of academics to meet other individuals with similar interests and engage with the University in a different way. Some of my interests include reading, surfing, skiing, playing tennis, and making clothes. One of my favorite things to do is to travel to new and different places. I love experiencing new cultures and find my perspective on the world evolving every time. As a result, I chose to study Global Management in hopes of mixing one of my passions with my future career. I am also minoring in Spanish to achieve my goal of living in Spain for a period of my life.

I am lucky to be a participant in the Cyprus Plus 3 program during May of 2023. Throughout this program we will travel to the different cities of Cyprus, learn about its politics and most prominent industries, and gain knowledge on its culture. I originally applied for this program because of its focus on international business and unique location. I hoped to gain more knowledge on the various specialized areas in international business from the different companies we visit. It will be interesting to learn how the island’s culture and specialization in international business affect its own business culture. In addition, I am also looking to pick up another major in business and was hoping to learn more about Supply Chain in this program since it has various connections to international business. Cyprus has a large supply chain industry and has several large ports on the island. The ports in Cyprus interested me since they play a significant role in businesses around the island and in interactions with foreign companies.

Cyprus’s adjacent location to Europe, Africa, and Asia allows for an ideal and complex multinational business structure. Throughout my studies, I have learned how important geography is in business. I would like to use my experiences in Cyprus to identify which industries excel due to such a connected location. When we visit the chosen companies in Cyprus, I would like to ask questions about the effects of the relatively low corporate tax rate. I would also like to ask questions about how the growth in foreign companies has affected local businesses and Cyprus as a whole. Additionally, I am extremely excited to learn more about Cyprus’s history and culture. The island has an interesting history of being under the rule of several different countries, and I am interested in learning about how that affects Cyprus today. I am especially curious about how the division of the island into two separate nations affected its culture. Furthermore, I have been a big fan of Greek mythology since I was a kid and am immensely looking forward to learning more about how the island’s current traditions mix with their old ones.
