This morning, we took a crash course on the Czech language. It was a humbling experience having to learn how to pronounce the letters of the alphabet. I know for a fact there were two of three that I simply can’t say correctly. I was giving it my best effort, but there are sounds in the Czech language unlike anything I have ever encountered. As we practiced, some of the flow and sounds I was unfamiliar with began to make more sense to me.
Toward the end we were able to lock in on some of the most important phrases to know during our stay. Thank you and hello were are simply translations. Then we move to please. In Czech, we will use the word prosim (accent on the i). This word directly translates to please, but has many other applications. Our professor told us that the foreign students here often use it as their panic word when they run into a sticky situation. I look forward to trying to incorporate the small bit of language we learned during my interactions here.
