Matzana y mis amigos

Today was one of my favorite days in Argentina. We went to visit the hospital and it was on the poorer side. It looked out dated compared to the private hospitals I have visited so far. I learned it was a tertiary hospital and it has around 303 beds. One of the biggest departments was the nuerosurgery department which has been one of the biggest departments in most hospital we have visited. There was two floors: the lower floor was for hospitalization and the upper floor was for outpatient services. There were 5 blocks of outpatient services. The emergency department was cool to see and it was under construction and so was the ICU.

After the hospital, we went to the University of La Matzana. It reminded me of University of Miami due to the outdoor campus and the nice weather. Pittsburgh is definitely way bigger compared to this campus but I do like that because everything was close together. I met some nursing students like Sandy and Gloria who were incredibly sweet and described the schooling compared to the United States. I got their numbers and now we have each other on Instagram so now I have friends from Argentina. One thing we both had in common was that they there were nursing labs, and clinical stimulations where the nurses practice their skills. There was a gym as well with basketball courts and volleyball courts and swimming pools. The big differences was the education and clubs. There are no clubs in this university and they also have to pass English to graduate. At Pitt, there are over 100+ organizations and clubs and no language requirements unless you are doing a major or certification where you need to have it. The program at La Matzana is five years. There are two cycles. The first cycle is three years and has 30 subjects and when you complete that you get your associates degree which is equivalent to our LPN degree. The nurses are allowed to work in the hospital and they also start their clinical their very first semester. The second cycle which is two years and have to complete 19 subjects, they receive their bachelors. They also have to take two electives and two subjects to graduate. At Pitt and most American universities, our program is four years and we start our clinical around the second or third year.

The difference in getting masters and doctorate degree is different two. At La Matzana, the masters degree you can get are administration and public health. At Pitt, we can get our masters in Psychiatric nurses, Acute Care, etc. There are many doctoral programs as well in Pitt but at La Matzana only very few universities offer doctoral programs and Matzana didn’t have one. We also have a bigger sports experience at Pitt and many teams which we take pride in.

Also, I got to do a graffiti tour in Palermo which was so pretty, I also went to this book shop and got a book in Spanish which I am excited to read when I get back home. Below, I will insert some pictures of this amazing art.
