Hi everyone! My name is Georgia Martinez and I am from San Antonio, Texas. I am a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh Oakland Campus pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in Social Work. I found my passion for nursing when I was in high school, and ever since I have been so excited to become a nurse! I have a specific interest in pediatrics, but I am really enjoying learning about all the different specialties and finding out what is the best fit for me! Eventually, I also plan to become a Nurse Practitioner. Here at Pitt I am an active member of the Nursing Student Association and a club called Soccer for Social Change that volunteers in a youth soccer league that provides mentorship to underprivileged children in Pittsburgh. In my free time I love playing soccer, trying new foods, being active, and exploring Pittsburgh with my friends!
This summer I will be studying abroad in the United Kingdom, specifically in Birmingham and London. We were first introduced to the program when some faculty and students came to speak to our class about what Plus3 is, and I immediately knew that it was something I wanted to do! I am very interested to see how the US and UK health systems differ, and how nursing and education intersect and work together as well. I am excited about the opportunity to visit Birmingham City University to learn about their school and attend various lectures there, as well as visiting different sites across the city such as Children’s Hospital- especially with my interest in pediatrics. I would love to take a deep dive on how the healthcare system works in the UK, and how various factors can impact things like access and quality of care both in the UK compared to here in the US. I am so grateful for the opportunity to study abroad and visit both Birmingham and London as it will be a completely new experience that I know will leave me with many valuable lessons. I plan to take the knowledge and experience I gain while abroad and carry it with me into clinicals and my nursing career to become the best version of myself and provide the best possible care. I am so honored and excited to partake in this unique opportunity and share the various aspects of my experience!
